This past Monday, I was invited to the “Fools Gold” listening session for Detroit native Danny Brown’s latest album Old. It was a small personal event with Fool’s Gold Records that included bloggers, Goliath artist and the Spotify staff.
The vibe was great with food, drinks and plenty of networking opportunities. Before the album listening started, Fool’s Gold founder Dj A-Trak (also a frequent Kanye West G.O.O.D. Music Contributor) gave an opening speech where he discussed meeting Danny and helping him develop as an artist. Danny followed that up by sharing an explanation as to why he decided to name the album Old. “Everything gets old” he says. Nothing stays young and i wanted to make something timeless.” He also spoke on the process of creating the album, his musical influences (which included ODB, E-40, Easy -E and Outkast), and explained the difficulty he faced trying to make records earlier in his career. After a full listen to Old , it’s easy to tell Danny is a student of hip hop and is able to bring his vision to life while giving tales of the gritty streets of his home town Detroit. Stand outs for me included “The Return”, “Lonely”, “Dip”, “Dope Fiend Rental”, “Dope Song” and “Gremlins.”
