Sequels to most movies are always fluff and not as good as the first.” – Ray Allen
During the NBA finals last season Spike Lee had a great idea to capitalize on the Miami Heats title run. Spike wanted to make a film short of Denzel Washington reprising his role as Jake Shuutlesworth, finally being released from prison and reconnecting with his son Jesus Shuttlesworth (Ray Allen). The only problem was Ray Allen and the Miami Heat organization wanted no parts of the short film. They were on a mission and wanted to keep full focus on defeating the San Antonio Spurs.
Now fast forward to present day Allen has been quoted saying; “But it’s something we’ve been talking about for the last couple months. If we get a really good storyline and are able to bring everybody back, then it would be something worth doing.” One of the most positive things surrounding the rumors of this film was Allen reiterating how important having the original cast together would be for the authenticity of the project. “We’ve got to get Denzel and we’ve got to get Rosario. Obviously, it’s been more than 15 years, so there’s so many new story lines to talk about.”
This Friday in Brooklyn, several members of the Heat and Nets will wear jerseys with their nicknames including “King James” for LeBron, “D.Wade” Dwayne Wade, “Truth” for Paul Pierce, “The Kid” for Kevin Garnett, and of course “J. Shuttlesworth” for Ray Allen. Maybe Spike will begin his filming, now since he’ll have Shuttlesworth on his back. Lets hope all the stars align and this film is made. Hopefully Spike paid close attention to how well Best Man Holiday kept a good story line after a lengthy time off screen as well.
