Actor Johnny Depp is set to take on the role of late Los Angeles detective Russell Poole in a new film titled Labyrinth, investigating the murders of famed rappers Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur.

According to Screen Daily, Labyrinth will be based on a nonfiction novel of the same name penned by journalist Randall Sullivan. The novel details Poole’s investigation into the deaths of The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur with the LAPD scandal surrounding their unsolved deaths. Today (September 7) marks the 20th anniversary of Tupac being shot on the Las Vegas strip after a Mike Tyson title fight. Pac lost his life from bullet wounds six days later. Brad Furman will direct the film and production will begin this year. Russell Poole passed away a year ago, after suffering a heart attack. According to the detective he came to the conclusion that Suge Knight was behind the death of the Notorious B.I.G.
