Award winning Author, poet, and Civil Rights Activist Maya Angelou has died. She was 86. The renowned activist had been battling health problems, and recently canceled a scheduled special appearance that was to be held in her honor. The “Beacon of Life” award was to be presented to Angelou at the MLB Beacon Award Luncheon on May 30 in Houston.

Angelou has received over 50 honorary degrees, and is highly regarded as one of the most influential voices of our time. She also built a great relationship in the rap community, most recently appearing on Common’s The Dreamer/The Believer album. Her most famous poems include Still I Rise, Phenomenal Woman, and I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings to name a few.
