Lifetime is currently working on a biopic about the ill-fated songbird Aaliyah. Playing the late famed R&B songstress is ex-Disney Channel star Zendaya Coleman. Lifetime has noted that Zendaya will record four of Aaliyah’s songs for the film, based on the bestseller “Aaliyah: More Than a Woman” by former Time Magazine music editor Christopher Farley.
The official announcement will be made this week and filming will start in the next few upcoming weeks. Whether Zendaya realizes it or not, this is pretty big role and she will have quite a few eyes watching her every move and critiquing all mannerisms. Despite passing away in August of 2001, Aaliyah’s fan base is still very strong and her music continues to influence people like Drake, who continually mentions her in his lyrics, has her tatted on his back, uses her vocals in his songs like “Enough Said”, and even tried to make a posthumous album for her. Chris Brown even featured her vocals in “Don’t Think They Know”, and there are countless murals around the country dedicated to her.
Zendaya is known for her role on the Disney Channel Show “Shake It Up”, being on the sixth season of Dancing With The Stars, and debuted her first album September 2013 titled Zendaya. Zendaya is also a huge fan of Aaliyah and has often made references about Aaliyah on her social media accounts and in interviews when discussing who her influences are. She is highly talented, but playing Aaliyah is a highly coveted role and won’t be an easy feat. If done well, this role could open a lot of great opportunities for the ex-Disney Channel star. Can’t wait to see what she can do with it.
